I won't be picking up Syberia II, even though it's going for $10 as well. :sigh: Thanks for reading all this- I just had to get this out of my sytem, because I was so disappointed by this game. The game's ending left a good taste in my mouth, but it would have been so much sweeter if I had been able to care about Kate and her 'growth' as a person, but. The game isn't all bad, of course, the automoton theme is enjoyable, and as I said before, the artwork is outstanding. Syberia also lacks a lot of the things that have made other adventure games so fun- it almost completely lacks a sense of humor, the sountrack is weak, and the voice acting is mediocre. Where did the transition come from? You tell me, cuz' I ain't seeing it. Kate is 'supposed' to encounter some kind of personal growth on her journey, but she basically just acts like a complete wuss in the 1st and 2nd acts, and suddenly becomes a strong woman in the 3rd and 4th acts. Kate is slightly more fleshed out, but the lawyer-with-a-heart-of-gold gets wearisome, too.

Each character has exactly one note that they hit, over and over and over. Kate seems to meet only extremely one-dimensional stereotypical charaters in her life. This same type of puzzle keeps the game extremely linear- you can't go into the room that the egg grants acess to until you get to the room with the tongs, which you can't access until. For instance, in the 2nd act, Kate can't reach an egg right in damn front of her without hunting down a pair of tongs. Most of the time, it just feels like puzzles are thrown in for their own sake, it never feels like there are legitimate obstacles in Kate's path, just gamey puzzles. The gameplay is pretty lacking, the puzzles are very straightforward, but there's a fair amount of pixel hunting to do. It does have beautiful artwork and a nice atmosphere, but that's about where it stops.

I don't feel ripped off, it's worth that price, but I certainly don't think it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as The Longest Journey or Grim Fandango. But after reading some stellar reviews of Syberia, I finally got around to picking it up for $10. I am really an adventure gamer at heart, and there have been some really quality adventure/puzzle games that I have played. then adventure game designers have some serious work to do.Дon't get me wrong, this isn't an 'adventure games are dead' rant.
