Louis Black says that it contains the most mature and thought-provoking conversations about love that he's ever seen on film, and I'm inclined to agree. Before Sunset is the somewhat overlooked middle child of the three, not having the blush of first love from the first or the gritty realism of the third, but it's no less a masterpiece. Learning, through this documentary, what a collaborative process these films have been between Rick, Ethan Hawke, and Julie makes me love them even more. It helps that I'm able to see the man Jessie turned out to be, and the relationship he built with Celine. I love how my impressions of the characters have changed over the years, just as my impressions of 'real' friends would-in my twenties I was frustrated and even annoyed by Jessie's smugness and pretension, but now in my forties I see them as outgrowths of an insecurity combined with an earnestness about the meaning of things. Still, I think I can be objective enough to see that this is the greatest trilogy of all time. And like any sane person, I'm half in love with Julie Delpy.
